Soil preparation is essential for successful establishment of
herbaceous plants and display of color. When planting a large bed,
it is easier to amend the entire area. Add 2-3" of either peat
moss, compost, black topsoil or rotted manure and till to a depth
of 4-6". Deeper soil preparation is necessary if you are planting
large containers of perennials or ornamental grasses. In these
cases, follow the directions for planting containerized trees and
shrubs.

After the soil is adequately prepared, set the plant at the same
level it had been in the container. Firm the soil around the plant
to eliminate air pockets and water thoroughly.
Using a water soluble fertilizer at watering can be beneficial.
Avoid a high nitrogen fertilizer since this can promote more
foliage than flowers. Look for fertilizers that are high in
phosphorus and potassium. These nutrients help plant establishment
and flowering.
